Episode 216 - Better Dead Than Red

For our first episode recorded in 2023, we look at two films from writer/director Eric Red! We start off with "Cohen and Tate" from 1988, starring Roy Scheider and Adam Baldwin in a tale of two hitmen sent to retrieve a young boy and bring him in for questioning by the mob. It's a bit of a mess, with cartoony performances but it has enough good ideas and moments that it's ultimately satisfying. We follow that up with the entertaining "Bad Moon" from 1996, which stars Michael Pare and Mariel Hemingway as a brother and sister. At the start of the film, the brother is bitten by a werewolf and the family dog, which is the real standout actor in the movie, is none too happy about this dark presence in the home. It's fun despite its flaws and has a fantastic werewolf suit! We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. Episode 215 - Under the Flickering Brick

Happy New Year! Our last recording of 2022 is the first posted episode of 2023! We look at two weird little movies from directors we are very fond of. We start off with Rian Johnson's "Brick" from 2005. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Brendan, a high-schooler who is wrapped up in a very tangled and tragic mystery. Presented like a classic noir detective story, with sharp dialogue and double-crosses, it is a very strange amalgam but we all enjoyed it a lot. We follow that up with "Under the Silver Lake" from 2018. Directed by David Robert Mitchell and starring Andrew Garfield, it is a bizarre study of a man's dissolution in a dreamy, surreal version of modern-day Los Angeles. It is full of conspiracies, mysteries, and coincidences and seemingly demands a second viewing to catch all of the details. Not a perfect movie, but well worth your time to check out. Episode 214 - What's Grim Below

We make this podcast in a cave, so it should come as no surprise that our movies this time involve journeys deep under the surface of the earth. We start off with "Grim" from 1996, a tiny little movie from director Paul Matthews with an impressive monster suit and a story that almost instantly fell out of our brains after watching it. It is set in a small town with an elaborate set of caves running beneath it which are inhabited by a demon that is wreaking havoc across town. We follow that up with a real gem, 1984's "What Waits Below" from director Don Sharp and starring the wonderful Robert Powell. This is great pulpy adventure about a cave-expert that is tasked to help the army install a top secret device in a cavern that just might be inhabited by mysterious creatures! Episode 213 - Shut Your Witchy Mouth

Happy Halloween from the Cave!!! In the "spirit" of the season, we look at two very fun films from the 80s that focus on witches, curses and the overwhelming influence of evil. We start off with 1983's The Devonsville Terror from director Ulli Lommel. A new teacher shows up in a small town where the locals are NOT open to oustiders. The teacher learns about the checkered past of the town, and how they killed women who were accused of practicing witchcraft. Is she the reincarnation of one of those women???  You'll have to watch the movie to find out. We were in disagreement about the overall quality of the movie, but we all enjoyed it. We follow that up with a wonderful little flick called Superstition from 1982. The storyline is very similar, but focuses on one witch who puts a curse on a small estate. Jumping to contemporarty time, we see the estate has fallen into the hands of the local church. While cleaning up the estate for a family to move in, they release the ancient evil and murder and mayhem ensues. It's a great little atmospheric movie and we all recommend it completely! Episode 212 - Everything's Under Control

Who's that watching you from across the street? Is someone listening in to your private conversation? Did someone put something in your drink? Why is everyone out to get you? These are all questions that swirl in the minds of the conspiratorial and also in the cave this time as we look at two EXCELLENT conspiracy-related films. We start off with 1974's The Parallax View, directed by the legendary Alan J. Pakula and starring the also-legendary Warren Beatty. This is such a great piece of 70's cinema and is filled with wonderful moments, great acting and incredible dialogue. We follow that up with 1977's Capricorn One from ANOTHER legend, Mr. Peter Hyams and featuring a star-studded cast headed up by Hal Holbrook, James Brolin and Elliott Gould! It is the tale of a planned mission to the planet Mars which is secretly cancelled and faked because of safety issues. The astronauts find themselves in grave danger because they know too much and an amazing chase through the desert ensues. This is awesome, pulpy fun that still manages to be smart. Episode 211 - Flickering for Vengeance

In a world that seems to be clearly working AGAINST women, there is something cathartic about watching films where females turn the tables on the people keeping them down and teach them a little something about right and wrong. We watch two VERY wild examples of this type of storyline this time in the cave. We start off with 1987's Angel of Vengeance co-directed by two legends of low-budget filmmaking, Ted V. Mikels and Ray Dennis Steckler. It's a very rough tale of a woman beset by a group of survivalists in the desert and we get to watch her take them down one by one. It's a nasty bit of business but worth checking out. We follow that with 1985's Naked Vengeance from show-favorite Cirio Santiago. The story focuses on a woman who find herself in the wrong place at the wrong time and this sends her down a VERY dark path until she finds herself forced to murder most of the male residents of Silver Lake. It is a truly brutal movie but very satisfying once the revenge starts being handed out. We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. Episode 210 - Guys and Dahls

We are focusing on the respected director John Dahl on this episode of the podcast. A front-runner in the Neo-Noir movement, he has produced a number of films that drip with style and he loves a twisty plot full of backstabs and deceit. We start off by talking about The Last Seduction from 1994. Starring actor-turned-director Peter Berg and Linda Fiorentino, it's a pitch-black tale of a woman on the run who will use anything she can to control the people around her and to come out on top. We follow that up with the star-packed Red Rock West from 1993. The cast includes Nicolas Cage, Dennis Hopper, Lara Flynn Boyle and J.T. Walsh, all turning in fantastic performances. Set in a dusty western town, it follows a young man who's down on his luck, looking for a fresh start but what he finds instead is a case of mistaken identity that embroils him in a murder plot. Episode 209 - Snipe Hunt

America has a gun problem. So much media is out there where guns are featured almost as the lead characters, and sometimes there's nothing more fun than getting lost in this alternate reality and letting the cathartic violence wash away your cares of the day. It seems lately though that the reality of gun violence is harder and harder to ignore. We picked two movies for the podcast that focus on gun violence and the people who are behind those guns. These are both powerful and expertly-crafted films and we recommend both heartily! We start off with Peter Bogdanovich's debut as a director, 1968's Targets which tells the tale of young man raised in a gun-loving family who decides one day that he's going to kill as many people as he can. Boris Karloff turns in an amazing performance as a fading film star who's struggling with his place in society. We follow that with Two Minute Warning from 1976 which stars Charlton Heston and a slew of Hollywood luminaries in a story largely set in a football stadium during a playoff game where a lone sniper sits high above the crowd, slowly planning his next move. The tension is incredible and the sense of panic once the shooting starts is shockingly real. We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. Episode 208 - The Price is Right

Vincent Price is a horror icon for good reason...he's been in so many classics and has one of the most recognizable voices ever. We looked at two of his films that are a little lighter for the podcast this time. Starting with 1983's "The House of the Long Shadows" that has a truly stellar cast of horror luminaries including Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing and John Carridine. The lead is played by Desi Arnaz Jr, who's clearly doing his best but can't hold a candle ( literally ) to his costars. It's a fun, twisty tale of deception and it was amazing to see all those familar faces together in one film. We follow that up with the wacky "Bloodbath at the House of Death" from 1984. Starring British comedian Kenny Everett, its a broad parody of horror tropes and is largely successful throughout. There are some genuinely laugh-out-loud moments and very fun surprises. Episode 207 - Dirtbikes to Dentures

When we sat down to record episode 207, we just wanted to talk about Fred Ward and how much we love him in everything! Several days after recording, the world learned that he had passed away, and we were left with an episode where we talk at length about him, not knowing what was to come. So, please think of this episode as a memoriam for a great actor who was great in every film he was in, with a wonderful smile and a tendency to outshine anyone he was acting beside. What a legend, and what an incredible body of solid work!
We start the show off by talking about the 1982 movie "Timerider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann" from director William Dear. Featuring some fairly dark moments for a PG-rated film, it's a fun little diversion with a strong supporting cast including Peter Coyote as the villain. We follow that up with a masterpiece from 1990 called "Miami Blues" from George Armitage. Costarring Jennifer Jason Leigh and Alec Baldwin, it is a very unique blend of comedy, drama, police procedural and character study. This one should NOT be missed!
