Episode 218 - Suds and Songs
Come back with us to the 70's for two music-focused films that you may know more for the songs on their soundtracks than for the story content. We start off with "FM" from 1978, with an incredible cast, including Martin Mull, Cleavon Little and Eileen Brennan. The plot follows the staff at a radio station in Los Angeles that is struggling to maintain it's integrity while corporate forces want to blindly pursue profits. It's a noble tale, but it doesn't completely hit the target. We follow that up with the massively superior "Car Wash" from 1976, which was written by Joel Schumacher. The film is a funny, honest look at the team of oddballs working at a Los Angeles car wash, and follows them over the course of a hot summer day. There is a parade of peculiar customers, some pranks and hijinks between the workers, and plenty of social commentary that still feels pointed now. These movies are both fun looks back and are worth searching out, but we highly recommend Car Wash. We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun.
