We start off with Force Four from 1975 where Tanzania is part of a 4-person team that are assigned special missions by an unknown group. Their mission in the movie is to recover a stolen African artifact, but to do so is going to require a LOT of martial arts, and this movie really piles it on. We follow that with his starring role in 1976's Devil's Express. This really shows how magnetic he is and how tragic it is that we never got to see him continue as a leading man. The story this time is focused on an ancient Chinese demon that escapes to the USA and hides in the New York city subway, where it goes on a murderous rampage. Tanzania really turns it up in this one and we also get to see some really excellent supporting actors helping with the heavy lifting. Though both films are recommended, Devil's Express is really the jewel. Both movies are available on free streaming sites, and we urge you to check them out! We are staying true to our mission of finding strange little movies and telling you about them, but we're making some small adjustments to the overall format. To begin the new year, we're looking at two films about movie-fans who are more than a little bit out of control. As fanatics ourselves, these both struck pretty close to home! We start off with "Fade to Black" from 1980. Starring Dennis Christopher and with a fun appearance from the always-great Tim Thomerson, the story focuses on an obsessive movie fan who finds a Marilyn Monroe look-a-like and then goes murderously off the ledge. It's fun with some great cameos and cool location footage of late 90's Hollywood. We follow that with 1991's "Popcorn" which has a team of film students at a local college organizing a festival of B movies. Once the festival begins, they fall prey to a mysterious killer one by one. It also includes the "mysterious lost film" trope which we love, to really pump up the enjoyment. Is it a perfect movie? No. But, is it a lot of fun? Yes! Please let us know what you thought of the show, and send us some suggestions for future episodes. As a special gift during the holidays, we bring you a very fond retrospective of the year 2023 and the movies we REALLY liked and the ones we REALLY didn't! But, before we get to that, we spend time remembering the good old days of visiting actual video rental stores and the magic of discovering something new based entirely on the box art or the simple fact that it was available when the movie you came for was already rented. Our friend Eli joins us for this look into the rearview mirror and he lends MUCH to the conversation. We really want to thank everyone for sticking with us through the year and we can't wait to get back in the cave in 2024! Happy New Year, and please keep flickering! This time in the cave we look at two movies which feature this fact at the core of their stories. We start off with "Magic" from 1978. Directed by Richard Attenborough and starring true Hollywood heavyweights Anthony Hopkins, Ann-Margaret and Burgess Meredith, and with a script by the legendary William Goldman, based on his own novel...it's no suprise that it's great! This is a dark tale of derangement and psychosis, with young Anthony Hopkins turning in a powerful performance. It's great, watch it! We follow that with 1988's "Pin" from director Sandor Stern. This is a bizarre family drama where a strict father has convinced his children that the medical mannequin in his office can speak. Using ventriliquism, he lets the mannequin handle key moments of fatherly advice and this produces two VERY disturbed children who grow up to be VERY disturbed teenagers. It's weird and disturbing but also well-shot and assembled. Listen in to find out if it sounds like it's for you. We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. Please let us know what you thought of the show, and send us some suggestions for future episodes. We start off with the abysmal "The Clown Murders" from 1976. Directed by Martyn Burke, who've we talked about before, this is a fully Canadian production with some familiar faces in the cast, including the late great John Candy! The story is more complicated than it needs to be and the script wanders here and there, leaving the viewer dissatisfied and confused. We follow that up with the surprising "Blood Harvest" from 1987. Directed by the legend Bill Rebane and starring the famous weirdo Tiny Tim, this one really delivers the goods! What's most surprising is that the whole thing was shot in 2 days and, viewed with that in mind, this is essentially perfect. We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. We have been wanting to cover the work of Ron Ormond since we first stepped into the cave, many years ago! He has been slowly gaining more recognition recently and a box set of his films has been released. Starting out on stage, he moved into films and had a successful run making exploitation movies primarily for drive-in audiences. After an accident in a small plane which he survived, he became a devout christian and redirected his efforts toward religious and anti-communist propaganda. This guy really does have the goods and the two films we look at on this episode REALLY prove it! We start off with "White Lightnin' Road" from 1967. Filled with moonshiners and stock car racers, this one really hits the sweet spot. There is romance, action, deceit and murder in this one and it's all wonderfully over-the-top yet still extremely captivating. There is some sort of bizarre magic going on that makes this stuff work...it's really something you have to see to believe. We follow that with 1968's "The Exotic Ones" where a strip club in New Orleans captures a swamp monster and displays it as a way to attract a crowd. The lighting is lurid, the strippers are badass, the criminals are ruthless and it's sheer perfection all the way down! If it's not obvious at this point, we LOVED both movies and can't wait to watch more from Mr. Ormond, especially some of the later, religiously-focused stuff! We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. Please let us know what you thought of the show, and send us some suggestions for future episodes. We start off with the 1980 classic "Motel Hell" from show-favorite director Kevin Connor. It focuses on "Farmer Vincent" played by Rory Calhoun and his sister Ida, played by Porky's-own Nancy Parsons. They run the "Motel Hello" and are known all across the local area as the purveyors of "Farmer Vincent's Smoked Meats" which we find out are made from waylaid motorists who are trapped, buried in the ground to be fattened up and then butchered and smoked. It isn't a total success but it's an interesting curio from bygone days with a few standout moments that should be seen at least once. We follow this with the seemingly zero-budget "Auntie Lee's Meat Pies" from 1997. This is really a thing that has to be seen to be believed. Starring Karen Black as Auntie Lee, Michael Berryman as her bumbling son and Pat Morita as the local sherrif, the cast is definitely stacked for a movie at this level. The story is essentially that Auntie Lee, who worships Satan, takes bad men and turns them into delicious meat pies. Auntie Lee has a gorgeous squad of young women who go out into the world and tempt these bad men into situations where they can be captured and killed and brought back for processing. Directed by Joseph F. Robertson, who mostly has done adult films, this is a weird combination of trippy moments, soft-core sexiness and over-acting! Trust us, it's a completely unique experience. Both movies feature vampires and supple young females, and both are VERY entertaining! We start off with 1971's "Twins of Evil" which stars Grand Moff Tarkin himself, Peter Cushing, as a crusading member of "The Brotherhood" who is trying to save the souls of everyone in his small European village from the women he suspects are witches. His recently-ophaned twin neices come to town and coincidentally so does a vampire who seeks to turn one of the girls into the undead. We follow this up with 1972's "Vampire Circus", where we see a different European village beset by a horde of vampires that travel across the countryside putting on shows for the locals and feasting on anyone they can capture. Both of these are fun escapes and have plenty of surprises and twists. We highly recommend both! We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. We start off with "Psycho Beach Party" from 2000 which is a mash-up of the old beach party movies from the 50's and 60's combined with a bit of the "teens running amok" films, but with all of that projected through a modern lens and presented in a campy, tongue-in-cheek send up of all those genres. The campiness continues with our second film, 2003's "Die Mommie Die" which has Busch in the lead role as Angela Arden, a faded chanteuse with a very problematic family. The cast for this one is amazing and it is pure entertainment from beginning to end. We highly recommend both and they're streaming for free on YouTube and Tubi! We are looking at two films from director Mark L. Lester which he made very early in his prolific career. We start off with "Steel Arena" from 1973 which stars several real-life daredevils as they tour the backroads of America, performing their insane stunts at county fairs. We learn all about the struggles and dangers within the troupe and are treated to a few truly memorable moments. This is a very unique film that is entertaining from the first frame until the very disconcerting ending. Highly recommended! We follow this with 1977's "Stunts" which has a bonafide star-studded cast, including Robert Forster, Fiona Lewis, Joanna Cassidy, and Richard Lynch along with several other familiar faces. This is much more of a "movie" with a plot that revolves around a series of on-set murders that all target the stunt performers. It's got a few amazing moments in it, but it falls a little flatter than the other film. We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. Please let us know what you thought of the show, and send us some suggestions for future episodes. Our two movies this time have mirrors as the heart of the stories and, in both cases, these are mirrors you might want to avoid looking into! We start off with 1980's "The Boogey Man" from director Ulli Lommel. Opening in a flashback, set in a rural area, we see two young siblings involved with a reprehinsible mother. The brother and sister decide, on a fateful evening, that "enough is enough". When we cut to the present day we see that the events of that past event still haunt them as adults, and a malevolent force seems to be inhabiting a mirror that "saw the whole thing" back in the day. It's a little clunky but still an interesting story with some fun moments throughout. We follow that up with 1990's "Mirror Mirror" from director Marina Sargenti. This one has a great cast of show favorites like Karen Black, William Sanderson and Stephen Tobolowsky. Even Lily Munster herself, Yvonne De Carlo pops up in a fun role! The mirror in this one is haunted by a powerful evil entity that possesses a young girl in high school. She goes on a murderous rampage and must be stopped! This is an overwrought but entertaining movie with some great moments, but it's the level of campiness that really kicks it up to the next level. We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. Please let us know what you thought of the show, and send us some suggestions for future episodes. It's a sordid and occasionally confusing tale of a small town that is suddenly plagued with mysterious events, including murders! The local sherrif, played by show-favorite Bo Hopkins attempts to get to the bottom of things with the help of his two teenaged children. It's fun but doesn't hold a candle to our second movie, 1984's "Mutant" directed by John "Bud Cardos, and which ALSO stars Bo Hopkins as the local sherrif! This one has it ALL...zombies, conspiracies, murder, unruly rednecks, and Wings Hauser! We recommend both movies, but Mutant is the real winner of these two. We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. We start off with "FM" from 1978, with an incredible cast, including Martin Mull, Cleavon Little and Eileen Brennan. The plot follows the staff at a radio station in Los Angeles that is struggling to maintain it's integrity while corporate forces want to blindly pursue profits. It's a noble tale, but it doesn't completely hit the target. We follow that up with the massively superior "Car Wash" from 1976, which was written by Joel Schumacher. The film is a funny, honest look at the team of oddballs working at a Los Angeles car wash, and follows them over the course of a hot summer day. There is a parade of peculiar customers, some pranks and hijinks between the workers, and plenty of social commentary that still feels pointed now. These movies are both fun looks back and are worth searching out, but we highly recommend Car Wash. We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. In both movies, there are mysterious deaths occuring, the police are called in, and clothes are discarded...these are pure 80's nonsense and great examples of the sort of low-budget filmmaking that was happening back then. Both films are written and directed by the completely bad-ass Katt Shea and produced by none other than Mr Roger Corman himself! We start with "Stripped to Kill" from 1987 which has the always-reliable and gorgeous Kay Lenz in the lead, playing opposite BJ and the Bear leading man Greg Evigan. Lenz is a police officer who goes undercover as a stripper to try to find out who is killing the other dancers. It does a lot with it's miniscule budget and is totally worth checking out. We also watched the sequel, appropriately titled "Stripped to Kill 2: Live Girls" with Maria Ford taking over the lead role. Ford's character is a stripper who keeps having weird nightmares and waking up to find that one of her fellow dancers has turned up dead. This one is less successful than the first but there are moments throughout that make it worth watching. We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. We start off with "Cohen and Tate" from 1988, starring Roy Scheider and Adam Baldwin in a tale of two hitmen sent to retrieve a young boy and bring him in for questioning by the mob. It's a bit of a mess, with cartoony performances but it has enough good ideas and moments that it's ultimately satisfying. We follow that up with the entertaining "Bad Moon" from 1996, which stars Michael Pare and Mariel Hemingway as a brother and sister. At the start of the film, the brother is bitten by a werewolf and the family dog, which is the real standout actor in the movie, is none too happy about this dark presence in the home. It's fun despite its flaws and has a fantastic werewolf suit! We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. Our last recording of 2022 is the first posted episode of 2023! We look at two weird little movies from directors we are very fond of. We start off with Rian Johnson's "Brick" from 2005. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Brendan, a high-schooler who is wrapped up in a very tangled and tragic mystery. Presented like a classic noir detective story, with sharp dialogue and double-crosses, it is a very strange amalgam but we all enjoyed it a lot. We follow that up with "Under the Silver Lake" from 2018. Directed by David Robert Mitchell and starring Andrew Garfield, it is a bizarre study of a man's dissolution in a dreamy, surreal version of modern-day Los Angeles. It is full of conspiracies, mysteries, and coincidences and seemingly demands a second viewing to catch all of the details. Not a perfect movie, but well worth your time to check out. We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. Please let us know what you thought of the show, and send us some suggestions for future episodes. We start off with "Grim" from 1996, a tiny little movie from director Paul Matthews with an impressive monster suit and a story that almost instantly fell out of our brains after watching it. It is set in a small town with an elaborate set of caves running beneath it which are inhabited by a demon that is wreaking havoc across town. We follow that up with a real gem, 1984's "What Waits Below" from director Don Sharp and starring the wonderful Robert Powell. This is great pulpy adventure about a cave-expert that is tasked to help the army install a top secret device in a cavern that just might be inhabited by mysterious creatures! It was a real surprise and we all loved it! We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. In the "spirit" of the season, we look at two very fun films from the 80s that focus on witches, curses and the overwhelming influence of evil. We start off with 1983's The Devonsville Terror from director Ulli Lommel. A new teacher shows up in a small town where the locals are NOT open to oustiders. The teacher learns about the checkered past of the town, and how they killed women who were accused of practicing witchcraft. Is she the reincarnation of one of those women??? You'll have to watch the movie to find out. We were in disagreement about the overall quality of the movie, but we all enjoyed it. We follow that up with a wonderful little flick called Superstition from 1982. The storyline is very similar, but focuses on one witch who puts a curse on a small estate. Jumping to contemporarty time, we see the estate has fallen into the hands of the local church. While cleaning up the estate for a family to move in, they release the ancient evil and murder and mayhem ensues. It's a great little atmospheric movie and we all recommend it completely! Is someone listening in to your private conversation? Did someone put something in your drink? Why is everyone out to get you? These are all questions that swirl in the minds of the conspiratorial and also in the cave this time as we look at two EXCELLENT conspiracy-related films. We start off with 1974's The Parallax View, directed by the legendary Alan J. Pakula and starring the also-legendary Warren Beatty. This is such a great piece of 70's cinema and is filled with wonderful moments, great acting and incredible dialogue. We follow that up with 1977's Capricorn One from ANOTHER legend, Mr. Peter Hyams and featuring a star-studded cast headed up by Hal Holbrook, James Brolin and Elliott Gould! It is the tale of a planned mission to the planet Mars which is secretly cancelled and faked because of safety issues. The astronauts find themselves in grave danger because they know too much and an amazing chase through the desert ensues. This is awesome, pulpy fun that still manages to be smart. We loved both of these movies and recommend them heartily! We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. We watch two VERY wild examples of this type of storyline this time in the cave. We start off with 1987's Angel of Vengeance co-directed by two legends of low-budget filmmaking, Ted V. Mikels and Ray Dennis Steckler. It's a very rough tale of a woman beset by a group of survivalists in the desert and we get to watch her take them down one by one. It's a nasty bit of business but worth checking out. We follow that with 1985's Naked Vengeance from show-favorite Cirio Santiago. The story focuses on a woman who find herself in the wrong place at the wrong time and this sends her down a VERY dark path until she finds herself forced to murder most of the male residents of Silver Lake. It is a truly brutal movie but very satisfying once the revenge starts being handed out. We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. A front-runner in the Neo-Noir movement, he has produced a number of films that drip with style and he loves a twisty plot full of backstabs and deceit. We start off by talking about The Last Seduction from 1994. Starring actor-turned-director Peter Berg and Linda Fiorentino, it's a pitch-black tale of a woman on the run who will use anything she can to control the people around her and to come out on top. We follow that up with the star-packed Red Rock West from 1993. The cast includes Nicolas Cage, Dennis Hopper, Lara Flynn Boyle and J.T. Walsh, all turning in fantastic performances. Set in a dusty western town, it follows a young man who's down on his luck, looking for a fresh start but what he finds instead is a case of mistaken identity that embroils him in a murder plot. This one is really excellent and should be seen without knowing too much about how the story develops. We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. So much media is out there where guns are featured almost as the lead characters, and sometimes there's nothing more fun than getting lost in this alternate reality and letting the cathartic violence wash away your cares of the day. It seems lately though that the reality of gun violence is harder and harder to ignore. We picked two movies for the podcast that focus on gun violence and the people who are behind those guns. These are both powerful and expertly-crafted films and we recommend both heartily! We start off with Peter Bogdanovich's debut as a director, 1968's Targets which tells the tale of young man raised in a gun-loving family who decides one day that he's going to kill as many people as he can. Boris Karloff turns in an amazing performance as a fading film star who's struggling with his place in society. We follow that with Two Minute Warning from 1976 which stars Charlton Heston and a slew of Hollywood luminaries in a story largely set in a football stadium during a playoff game where a lone sniper sits high above the crowd, slowly planning his next move. The tension is incredible and the sense of panic once the shooting starts is shockingly real. We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. We looked at two of his films that are a little lighter for the podcast this time. Starting with 1983's "The House of the Long Shadows" that has a truly stellar cast of horror luminaries including Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing and John Carridine. The lead is played by Desi Arnaz Jr, who's clearly doing his best but can't hold a candle ( literally ) to his costars. It's a fun, twisty tale of deception and it was amazing to see all those familar faces together in one film. We follow that up with the wacky "Bloodbath at the House of Death" from 1984. Starring British comedian Kenny Everett, its a broad parody of horror tropes and is largely successful throughout. There are some genuinely laugh-out-loud moments and very fun surprises. We recommend both of these! We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun.
